15 Images That Illustrate the Differences Between 2009 and 2019

A decade has passed since 2009, and it really is true in some ways that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Which is why, even though these images show how different things have become, they somehow remind us that there’s nothing new under the sun.

For example…VSCO girls, you are nothing new. Your mothers dressed the same way in high school in the late 90s/early 00s.

Oops.

14. In 2 decades we’ve traded scrunchies for silly bands for scrunchies.

13. So long to the Vans “Warped” Tour and Woodstock…hello Coachella.

12. We’ve eschewed pretty skinny jeans for mom jeans once again.

11. In 2009 the earworm was “Party in the USA.” Today, it’s “Old Town Road.”

9. I wouldn’t say we’ve exactly forgotten Lady Gaga, but Billie Ellish is having her time in the sun.

8. And teen girls have traded their band tees for crop tops.

7. Basically all makeup “rules” have been tossed out the window.

6. We’ve traded too-big sunglasses for ones that are too small.

5. Gucci belts replaced studded belts (but probably not for good).

4. q*eerEye has replaced Jersey Shore (partly because the cast of the latter is largely in jail).

3. Justin Bieber has gone from a first date with Selena Gomez to convincing someone to marry him.

2. The cameras and “portrait mode” have pretty much made photo editors obsolete.

1. Vibe checks have (thankfully) replaced flash mobs. Mostly. (Looking at you, Pete Buttigeg).
