15 People Share Their Unspoken Secrets

Source: @RealLameUserName on Reddit

Everybody’s got secrets. Sometimes the secrets stay that way because we’re embarrassed, or ashamed, or afraid of what might happen if they came to light. Other times, the only reason it’s a secret is because, well, it just doesn’t come up. The second kind sounds kind of banal at first, but it can be anything but when you dive in.

Check out this thread on r/AskReddit kicked off by user RealLameUserName:

Suddenly, thousands of previously hidden little personal tidbits flooded the page – an easier thing to do on an anonymous platform like Reddit. Here are some fascinating examples:

1. You don’t always know someone’s condition.

I actually have epilepsy, thankfully I’ve been seizure free for 13 years

– rdg-lee

2. We can make the strangest connections.

Once, when I was like 2 or 3, my family and I went shopping at the nearby strip mall. At some point, I lost my parents and sister. I remember crying in front of one of those large stacked displays of TVs, all playing the song and music video to Britney Spears’ “Oops, I Did It Again” for a really long time before anyone found me.

Now, the weird part. Whenever something bad is about to come up in my dreams, that song starts playing. I can pre-emptively wake myself up from nightmares because “Oops, I Did it Again” will start playing, right on cue, RIGHT before anything really awful happens (sometimes I even see the music video). This wasn’t even a super traumatic incident or anything; I guess the fact that I still remember it is a testament to how good of a childhood I had!

3. Your friend might have a double.

I’m a twin. Could know someone for years, and it never comes up.

But when it’s finally mentioned it’s so mind blowing to them that i have a twin because they’ve known me for so long and didn’t know.

4. We’re made by forces in and out of our control.

That white streak in my hair is not dye its natural everyone just assumes I dye it and doesn’t ask about it.

– Solidclaw

5. Some hidden traits are BIZARRELY specific.

As a kid, I could nibble American cheese into any state shape and most large countries.

It was my ‘talent’ when I was interviewed for commercials once and it got me on Kids Say The Darndest Things.

– PrinceofCanino

6. Some people are doing what they want done for them.

I plan really nice parties and events for people and someday hope someone does it for me.

– CupcakesGalore822

7. A lot of folks had a bend in their path that shaped them.

I am ambidextrous. I was born a righty but I had my right arm really badly broken as a kid and took a while to heal.

Time during which I had to adjust to using my left hand for most of the things. After my right arm finally healed, I still used my left hand for a while because I was so used to it but once I started re-using my right one, it was still so natural.

So I kind of trained my left one to work just as well as the dominant one.

– mikkeldaman

8. You may relate to someone more than you know.

I did a ton of drugs as a young adult and committed some felonies, but I never got caught and decided to take a different path when all my friends started getting locked up (not a snitch, just more careful). Now I work at a prison with people who were convicted of the same types of things I used to be involved in.

Most of them assume I don’t even know what marijuana looks like. If anyone knew the truth it would hurt my credibility, but those experiences are actually what make me good at my job.

9. Many people in the thread talked about their unspoken fears.

I’m scared of the dark to the point where I carry a flashlight on me almost constantly just in case

– kay37892

10. It’s good to have things that make us feel unique, no matter how strange.

I’m quite good at barking.

When I was younger I would go by the window and bark across the neighbourhood and some dogs would bark back non stop, thinking it’s a dog.

It feels like I’ve made a connection with them. Very nice feeling.

– yesungs

11. And then there’s this…human sleep compass?

I can tell which direction (east, west, northeast, etc.) my head pointed towards in almost every single bed I have slept even if it was just for a night.

– cedreamge

12. Thalassophobia: “Intense and persistent fear of the sea.”

I used to have thalassophobia because I saw my cousin get swept away by waves when I was 5 or 6. To this day I still don’t know if it was a real memory or a dream. I talked to my cousin about it and he faintly remembers it happening but isn’t sure either.

We are convinced we both suppressed the trauma which is why we can’t make out the details other than how old we were and where it was, but have no recollection of what happened next or who saved him.

For a long time, whenever I was looking out at a body of water where you can’t see land on the other side, I’d get chills down my back, feel cold/clammy, claustrophobic, and wouldn’t be able to bring my eyes up to look at it directly.

13. Some secrets are beyond belief.

I can’t burp. At all. Zero burps ever.

– DudeAtWork55

14. Some should be explored further.

My mom had to teach me facial cues from flash cards, art & games when I was little.

To this day if I don’t have facial cues to go on, I can’t determine the meaning of what someone is saying based on tone of voice.

– Tiny-Villain

15. And some secrets…are almost too good to be true.

My middle name is Cage because my dad was a really big Nic Cage fan in the 90s

– Stauen

We’ve all got a little something people don’t know about. Maybe we want to share it, or maybe, we want to hold onto it. Either is fine, because at the end of the day, it’s ours.
