Mom Shames College Students for Wearing Leggings, and She Gets an Earful From the Internet

It started with a Catholic mom, Maryann White, who was attending mass.

After seeing how the young women were dressed, she was compelled to write a letter to the editor of The Observer, Notre Dame’s student newspaper:

Leggings are so naked, so form fitting, so exposing. Could you think of the mothers of sons the next time you go shopping and consider choosing jeans instead? Let Notre Dame girls be the first to turn their backs(ides) on leggings. You have every right to wear them. But you have every right to choose not to.

It’s yet another instance of women being blamed for the way men choose to act. It’s an attitude that perpetuates rape culture, and the women of Notre Dame weren’t having it.

To protest, students declared the next day #LeggingsDayND.

Here’s one student who protested her right not to be responsible for men:

Here’s another student out to steal men’s souls:

And of course other Twitter accounts had to join in, pointing out the hypocrisy:

Because, I mean, it is hypocritical.

There’s no reality where leggings should be seen as anything other than thin jeans.

So no, we won’t be thinking of mothers. Because who does that?!?

Perhaps the best response is from another mom, Heather Piccone, who wrote a letter to the editor in response to the first one:

My daughter is not responsible for this woman’s sons’ thoughts or behaviors.

I raised a woman who is strong, wise, intelligent, moral, unrestrained in her choices and also confident in herself. I raised her to love and accept people. I raised her not to judge, but to take ownership of her own choices and try to better herself daily. I raised her to focus on being the “fearfully and wonderfully made” child of Christ, who lives to refine herself daily.

I suggest this woman focuses on that with her sons; leggings are the least of this world’s current gender issues.

Preach girl!

So that’s what they internet has to say. What do you think?
