Shing Yin Khor is many things: an immigrant, an artist, and someone who suffers from depression.
Her artwork is very personal, and, for this set, she chose to focus on how she molds her identity as a productive person who suffers from depression when she is not working.
She said, “Many of us seem to be trapped in a capitalist dichotomy of our work as the measure of our personal value and the need to express ourselves on our own terms and schedule.”
Shing Yin Khor also added, “Sometimes, that schedule is not so efficient. It runs in a bit of a cycle, too — it’s not like being depressed has ever made anyone a particularly efficient person.”
It’s a constant struggle for Shing Yin Khor, and she, like a lot of us, will continue to fight through every day by working hard and being productive.
