Why do people stay in unhappy relationships?
There are all sorts of reasons, the most dire of which is probably “they’re in danger if they leave.” That’s a horrific reality for a lot of people trapped in abusive, violent, or manipulative relationships. But it’s not the only reason someone might choose to be in an unhappy couple rather than strike out on their own.
Here are a few of the reasons some men in particular have stuck it out.
20. For the kids
It’s quite a strategy – who knows if it will pay off in the long run.
19. I guess I’ll stay
If you already want to leave, you should probably just leave.
18. Rather annoyed
Talk about feeling super duper insecure.
17. Don’t know what to do
You act in the moment then deal with it later on.
16. What’s the alternative?
That undiscovered country from whose bourn no traveler returns.
15. Very painful
Sounds like what you both want and need are not at all balanced.
14. In my name
Sounds less like a relationship and more like a tenuous system of threats.
13. For them
One day they’ll realize that.
12. What even
Love makes you do thoroughly insane things.
11. Too hot
Physical beauty fades. Trust is forever.
10. For the kids
Honestly, they would probably heal easier from a separated but stable home than a complete but chaotic one.
9. Another man
What would he become in the hands of another?
8. “At work”
Doesn’t seem like the sort of thing that’s gonna prove to be sustainable.
7. The right decision?
If you’re still feeling this way, then maybe it wasn’t.
6. Have to settle
I think there may be other options, actually.
5. Makes me wonder
It’s a tough dating world out there, no doubt.
4. Your cheatin’ heart
OK but that’s not gonna last.
3. To protect him
That’s an impossible situation.
2. Second time’s the charm
It should be clear enough what needs to be done now.
1. Possibly screwing up
Better to try and fail than resign yourself to a familiar failure, I say.
Good luck to all of y’all, I hope things work out for the better.
