Everywhere you go, people are ready and willing to give advice, whether you asked for it or not.
But how many of those words of wisdom end up actually being useful?
What is a piece of advice someone gave you that ended up being SURPRISINGLY good?

Lucky for us, the internet is here to help us sort through and find the gems.
11. Down in the dumps
How can you tell the difference?
“Son, if a person fell down a hole and is reaching to you to get out, you should always help him. But sometimes there are people in deep holes reaching for you to pull you down so they are not alone. This kind of people you should kick in the face instead of giving a hand.”

10. The battle hill
You don’t have to fight every single fight.
Asking myself “Is this is a hill I am willing to die on?” has given me energy to really focus on what matters most in my career & life. And most of the hills are sticking up for my own 2 children and students and I’ve never regretted one battle I have fought for them.

9. Story time
We really connect with stories.
When prepping for a job interview, get ready to tell some stories to illustrate the points that you want to make about yourself. People like stories more than assertions and generalizations.

8. Lessons learned
Fool me once, shame on you…
One I learned which gave me the courage to kick my shithead ex husband out: if you keep having to learn the same lesson over and over you will never change a thing.

7. Open a world
You’ll be glad you did.
Don’t purchase anything for your kids above their age range except for books.

6. Sleep is for the weak
Or really, the childless.
Parenting specific but “don’t count the hours of sleep you get/miss” you get the sleep you get.

5. Don’t pack it on
“More work for the same pay? Oh boy, thanks mister!”
When your boss asks you to take on new roles/responsibilities, ask them which current ones you will be able to give up in exchange. Saying “yeah, I got it” every time will leave you over extended and likely to screw one or more of those things up.

4. I don’t know
Some of the most powerful and underutilized words in existence.
A boss, mentor and friend… all rolled into one astonishing human… taught me that “I don’t know” is a perfectly acceptable answer, and much better than trying to bullshit your way thru.

3. Run for it
It’s a nice feeling sometimes.
“Take the blame and run with it.”
— James Linzel (@JamesLinzel) March 21, 2021
2. Sleep on it
You might just feel better in a bit.
“Sleep on it” and never send a written message that 1) you haven’t read to yourself out loud and 2) you’re not prepared to read out loud in court.

1. Forgive and heal
It’s a two-way street.
Forgiveness is FOR YOU. Not for the person you’re forgiving. Forgiving them doesn’t let them off the hook for what they did — it lets YOU relieve yourself of the pain someone has given you as a burden. Learning to forgive is an act of liberation.
